Shoot ... Watch ... Identify ...

Thanks to a science called PHENOLOGY we can study climate change through the observation of plants. By repeating the observations on the same site at different times or seasons, it is possible to appreciate the phenological differences of small-scale plants (presence of leaves, flowers, appearance of the plant, appearance and ripening of the fruits, etc.) but above all observe with scientific method the changes in the environment and help provide information for climate change studies

WE ASK YOU A FEW THINGS

– Describe the area in which the plant is located by responding to the type of information required on the phenological observation sheet, report the date of the survey, the species, the phenological phase and if you want, add some of your observations.

– The card shows the detection key with the various phenomena synthetically described: the vegetative phenophases are marked by the abbreviations VEG, the reproductive ones by the abbreviations RIPR, both associated with a number that indicates the order of appearance of the phase.

– Fill in a form for each individual tree.

The phenological card is to be filled in periodically for each survey and for each plant.

Fill in and send the data every time the phases vary from the last observation!

I remind you that:

Phenological scale or key: it is a guide for the recognition of the different phenophases.
Phenophase: it is the developmental stage or phenological phase of a plant.
VEG = vegetative phase
RIPR = reproductive phase
BBCH = phase identified in the BBCH phenological scale

HOW CAN I DO PHENOLOGY BY STAYING AT HOME?

CASE IN WHICH THE PLANT AND PHENOLOGICAL PHASE ARE IDENTIFIED

Look from your window, take the photo of the tree (or shrub), identify your plant (for recognition you can use the dichotomous key), answer the information requested on the phenological card, send the card and the photo of your plant .

CASE IN WHICH THE PLANT IS IDENTIFIED BUT NOT THE PHENOLOGICAL PHASE

Look from your window, take the photo, identify the tree (for recognition you can use the dichotomous key, answer the information requested on the phenological card, send the card and the photo to define the phenological phase with us *

CASE IN WHICH THE PLANT AND PHENOLOGICAL PHASE ARE NOT IDENTIFIED

Take the photo of the tree and send it: we will help you identify the plant and the phenological phase. If you can answer some information among those requested on the card *
